It's the little things...
When I started my photography business, I thought photography would be about lighting, lenses, posing, and editing. And while it is all of those things, I've learned it's something much deeper, something I never saw coming when I started this journey.
Here are some of the most surprising, beautiful things I didn’t expect when I became a photographer:
1. Getting Life Changing Texts Before the World Does
I never expected to be one of the first people to know about a pregnancy. But it’s happened, more than once. A client texts me with “We're pregnant” followed by, “We want to book a session but haven’t told anyone yet.” Those moments leave me speechless (and thrilled). To be trusted with news that personal is an honor that humbles me every single time. Photography becomes more than a service; it becomes part of their story, part of their joy. And I am also grateful that they are thinking ahead so I can get them scheduled, lol!
2. The Feeling When Clients Come Back or Send Someone Else
There’s a unique kind of joy that comes when I get an email from someone saying, “So and so told me about you, and I just had to reach out,” or when a past client books their third or fourth session. It’s a genuine affirmation that my work touched someone, meant something, made them feel seen. Referrals and returning clients remind me that this isn’t just about taking pretty pictures. It’s about building trust, delivering an experience, and being there for the moments people want to remember forever.
3. Watching Families (and People) Grow
Some of my favorite sessions are with families I’ve photographed year after year. I’ve watched toddlers grow into school kids, newborns become big siblings, and couples evolve into parents. I’ve also seen individuals chase dreams, change careers, launch businesses, and come into their own. I don’t just take pictures; I get to witness growth, transformation, and love in real time. And trust me when I say that I am absolutely cheering for you!
4. The Unexpected Friendships
Some clients have become friends. Some start as strangers and leave the session feeling like we’ve known each other forever. I never expected photography to open so many doors to connection. But it has and it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
In the end, I got into photography because I loved creating beautiful images. I stayed because I fell in love with the people behind them.
If you’re a photographer reading this, keep showing up with your heart. You never know the quiet impact you’re having, the stories you’re preserving, or the people who feel truly seen because of your work.
And if you’re someone who has trusted me with your memories, thank you. You’ve given me more than you know.
